KOOTTICKAL

Koottickal, situated in the Western Ghats is 5 km north of Mundakayam in Kottayam district. The majesty of the mountain ranges combined with the beauty of the forest and the artificial lake created by the check-dam of the Manimala river makes the spot linger in your mind. Amruthameda, famous for medicinal plants is nearby. Koottickal is well connected by roads to the main cities. Erumeli, the famous pilgrim centre is only 12 km south, while sabarimala is 60 km away. The waterfall at Vadakkemala, near Koottickal is another attraction.

Rubber is major crop in Koottickal, one of the first places in India where it was cultivated. The Irish planter,Joseph Murphy nurtured his rubber plantations here. The tomb of Murphy is situated atop the nearby hillock in Eandayaar. It is one of the most beautiful places in Kottayam district.
