MUNROE BACK WATER

In 1795 the British established their supremacy in South India and Kerala came under their governance.From 1800 onwards, inorder to maintain British Supremacy in Kerala, a Resident was appointed by the British Administrative head. The First Resident was Colonel Collin Macaulay followed by Colonel John Munro. During Munro’s time a senior priest of the Malankara Sabha, Pulikottil Joseph Kathanar expressed his desire to establish seminary for training priests and a place to settle the newly converted Christians. The piece of land thus provided by the Mercy of Colonel Munro was named after him by the locals and is still known as Munroe Island . This land was part of old travancore. when Rani seth parvathibhai ruled over travancore this piece of land is contributed to Church Missionary Society. since 1819 CMS is allowed to collect income from the land and to utilise exclucively for the "MENNANNA CHLAVU" of the Syrian students who are in pazhaya seminary. The should not be used for any other evangelistic purposes. The first community tourism programme in the State will start functioning from the MunroeThuruthu islands in Kollam district.This was announced by Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan during a visit to the islands. The community tourism programme will operate on the basis of the proposals made by the grama panchayats concerned. The programme envisaged private participation too and would function under the motto ‘Ente gramam tourism sauhritha gramam.’ Mr. Balakrishnan announced the programme after clearing the recommendations submitted in this connection by the Munroe Thuruthu grama panchayat. He said the community tourism project was meant for both domestic and foreign tourists. In addition to accommodation facilities that will come up under the programme, houses in the islands lying vacant will be utilised for the purpose.
